Introduction

Koyasan is a tranquil and sacred mountain village located in the northern Wakayama mountains, standing at an elevation of about 800 meters. It serves as the heart of the Shingon School of Buddhism, which was established by the esteemed monk Kobo Daishi (Kukai) in 819. History

Koyasan was founded as a monastic community, designed to be free from worldly distractions. Kobo Daishi lived and taught in this area until his passing in 835. In 2004, Koyasan was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the “Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range.”

How to Get There

To travel to Koyasan, take the Nankai Railway from Osaka’s Namba Station to Gokurakubashi Station. From there, switch to the Koyasan Cable Car, which will take you to Koyasan Station. A short 10-minute bus ride from the cable car station will lead you to the heart of Koyasan town. It is advisable to purchase the Koyasan World Heritage Ticket, which includes all transportation and offers discounts for various attractions.
