Fort Canning Park’s history stretches back to the 14th century when it was called Bukit Larangan or Forbidden Hill, thought to be the site of ancient Majapahit kings’ palaces and burial grounds. The British later used it as a military base, and it played a crucial role during World War II. In 1981, Lee Kuan Yew renamed it Fort Canning Park.
