Vrelo Bosne is a tranquil natural park situated just outside Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. It’s a perfect spot for those who love nature and want a break from the hustle and bustle of the city. The park is renowned for the stunning spring of the River Bosna, which meanders through verdant forests and numerous small streams, creating a breathtaking landscape.
Vrelo Bosne boasts a rich history that stretches back to ancient times. The area has been an archaeological site since around 2400–2000 BC and was significant during the Roman era. Although the spring water is drinkable, it’s generally not recommended for consumption. During the Bosnian War, the park fell into disrepair, with trees being cut down for heating. However, in 2000, local youths, supported by an international ecological organization, restored the park to its former glory.
Located about 12 kilometers from Sarajevo’s city center, Vrelo Bosne is easily accessible by car, taxi, or public transport. If you’re driving, just follow the signs to Vrelo Bosne from Ilidža, a neighborhood in Sarajevo. There’s a paid parking lot for visitors, and for a more scenic experience, you can opt for a horse-drawn carriage ride through the park.
