Morro Castle, officially known as Castillo de los Tres Reyes Magos del Morro, stands as a prominent historical site in Havana, Cuba. It acts as a sentinel for the Havana harbor and is celebrated for its architectural beauty and strategic positioning.
The origins of Morro Castle trace back to 1589 when it was built to defend Havana against pirate incursions. Designed by Italian engineer Battista Antonelli, it served as a vital defense mechanism until La Cabaña was completed in 1774. In 1762, the British captured the castle, but it was returned to Spanish control a year later under the Treaty of Paris.
Visitors can reach Morro Castle by taking a ferry across the bay or driving around it. Situated on a promontory opposite Old Havana, it is easily accessible by car or taxi.
Tickets are required to enter the castle and its museum. An additional fee is necessary to climb the lighthouse.
