Český Šternberk Castle is a remarkable early Gothic structure located in the Czech Republic, built around 1241 by Zdeslav of Divišov. The castle derives its name from the eight-pointed star on his coat of arms, translating to Sternberg or Star Mountain. For over 700 years, it has been the family residence of the Sternbergs, surviving numerous historical conflicts, including the Hussite wars and the Thirty Years’ War. Significant renovations took place in the 17th century, and after being taken over by the Communists in 1949, it was returned to the Sternbergs following the Velvet Revolution.
To reach Český Šternberk Castle, visitors can take a train from Prague to the nearby town of Sázava, which takes approximately 45 minutes. From Sázava, a short taxi ride or a walk will lead you to the castle. Alternatively, driving from Prague is convenient, taking about an hour via the D1 highway.
Ticket prices for guided tours typically hover around 200 CZK, but it’s wise to check the official website for the latest pricing and any special promotions, as these can vary by season and tour type.
