Cuevas de Ak’tun Kan is an intriguing limestone cave system near Flores, Guatemala. The name means “Cave of the Serpent” in Mayan, not because of actual snakes, but due to its winding shape.
These caves hold a mystical and religious importance for the Maya. Local legends say they were once submerged under Lake Petén Itzá and became accessible as the water levels dropped. The Maya have used them for rituals and celebrations.
To reach Cuevas de Ak’tun Kan, head to Santa Elena de La Cruz, just south of Flores. The caves are about 2 kilometers away, and a tuk-tuk from Flores town is a convenient option.
The entrance fee is usually around $5.00, and visitors receive a helmet and headlamp for their exploration.
