Looming over the Belle Fourche River in northeastern Wyoming, Devils Tower National Monument is a geological marvel that stands out against the rolling prairie surrounding it. Known for its unique and striking formation, it’s a popular destination for rock climbers, Native American cultural observers, and nature enthusiasts.
Devils Tower was the first declared United States National Monument, established in 1906. The monument has long been sacred to several Native American Plains tribes. Its name derives from an erroneous translation of the Lakota name “Bad God’s Tower”, hence the often noted missing apostrophe in its title.
Located in northeastern Wyoming, the closest town is Sundance. From Sundance, the monument is approximately a 30-minute drive via US-14 W. The nearest airports are Gillette-Campbell County Airport and Rapid City Regional Airport, served by several major airlines.
The entry fee is $25 per vehicle for a 1-7 day pass. Individual passes by foot or cycling are $15 and motorcycles are $20 . Annual passes are available at $45. Fees apply year-round.
