History of Devils Tower National Monument

Devils Tower was the first declared United States National Monument, established in 1906. The monument has long been sacred to several Native American Plains tribes. Its name derives from an erroneous translation of the Lakota name “Bad God’s Tower”, hence the often noted missing apostrophe in its title.
