Glasnevin Cemetery, located just outside Dublin City, is one of Ireland’s most historic and fascinating cemeteries. Established in 1832 by Daniel O’Connell, it has become a national monument and the final resting place for over 1.5 million people, including many iconic figures from Irish history. The cemetery’s Victorian Garden design and its rich history make it a must-visit destination for anyone interested in Irish heritage.

History

Glasnevin Cemetery was founded in response to the need for a Catholic burial ground in Dublin. The Penal Laws had restricted Catholics from performing their own funerals, leading to a public outcry when a Catholic priest attempted a limited funeral mass in 1823. Daniel O’Connell launched a campaign for a burial ground where both Irish Catholics and Protestants could give their dead dignified burial. The cemetery was consecrated and opened on February 21, 1832, with its first burial taking place the following day. Over the years, it has become a significant place of burial for those who lost their lives during the Great Famine and later cholera epidemics.

How to Get There

Glasnevin Cemetery is approximately 3 kilometers north of Dublin City Center. You can take the 40 or 140 bus from O’Connell Street, which will drop you right outside the entrance on Finglas Road. Alternatively, you can take the DART train to Drumcondra and walk for about 20 minutes to the cemetery. Cycling is also a great option, with plenty of space to securely park your bike.
