History

The origins of Himeji Castle date back to the 1400s, with the current structure completed in 1609. Remarkably, it has withstood natural disasters and wars, making it one of Japan’s twelve original castles that remain intact.

How to Get There

Reaching Himeji Castle is simple by train. From Kyoto, hop on the JR Sanyo Shinkansen Line’s Kodama, Sakura, or Hikari trains for a 55-minute ride. From Osaka, the Shinkansen takes about 45 minutes. Once at Himeji Station, head out the North Exit and walk roughly 1 km along Otemae-dori Street to the castle. Alternatively, buses and taxis are available from the station.

  1. Main Keep: This is the castle’s largest structure, with six levels and steep staircases. The top offers a small shrine and stunning city views.
  2. Sannomaru: The third bailey, free to enter, boasts a cherry tree-lined lawn, perfect for cherry blossom viewing in early April.
  3. Nishinomaru: The west bailey, once a princess’s residence, displays historical artifacts and replicas from feudal Japan.
  4. Gardens: The grounds have beautiful gardens and paths, ideal for photos.
  5. Otemon Gate: The main entrance, perfect for castle photos and cherry blossom views.

Ticket Information

  • Entrance Fee: ¥1000 for adults, ¥300 for students.
  • Hours: Open 9 am to 5 pm, last entry at 4 pm. In summer, open until 6 pm, last entry at 5 pm.
  • Tickets: Available only for the current day, no advance sales.
  • Accessibility: The Main Keep isn’t wheelchair accessible, but the surrounding grounds are.
