Hvalfjörður, meaning ‘Whale fjord’, is a deeply tranquil and enchantingly beautiful fjord located in the west of Iceland. Surrounded by mountains, waterfalls, and untouched nature, it is perfect for a peaceful getaway or an adventurous day trip alike.
During World War II, Hvalfjörður was a strategic location for the Allies and was heavily occupied by British and American forces. The old naval station and a disused whaling factory serve as reminders of this history. The fjord also draws its name from the large number of whales observed there in the past.
Hvalfjörður is an easy day trip from Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik, and is only about 50 km away. It can be reached by driving north on route 1 and then taking road 47 around the fjord. Another option is the Hvalfjarðargöng tunnel, which shortened the travel time around the fjord but you’d miss the scenic drive.
Attractions include the highest waterfall of Iceland, Glymur, hiking opportunities on the fjord’s surrounding mountains, and the beautiful and peaceful shoreline. The old war-time relics, including the remains of a fort and a pier, are also worth exploring.
There are no tickets required to explore Hvalfjörður as the region is open to public access. However, guided tours can be purchased from several companies if you prefer to have an expert lead your exploration.
