Marienplatz is a lively hub in Munich, rich in history and culture. Since its establishment in 1158, it has been a key meeting spot for both locals and visitors. Surrounded by landmarks like the New Town Hall and the Old Town Hall, it’s a great place for exploring history and enjoying modern entertainment.
Marienplatz has been central to Munich since its founding by Henry the Lion. Originally called Schrannenplatz due to the grain market, it was renamed Marienplatz in 1854 after a cholera outbreak. The Mariensäule, a column dedicated to the Virgin Mary, was put up in 1638 to celebrate Munich’s safety during the Thirty Years’ War.
Getting to Marienplatz is easy with the S-Bahn (S1, S2, S3, S4, S6, S7, and S8) and U-Bahn (U3 and U6) lines, which stop directly at Marienplatz station.
Visiting Marienplatz is free. Some attractions, like the Glockenspiel, are free, while others, such as the New Town Hall observation deck, require a ticket.
