The Museo de Arte Prehispánico de México Oaxaca, also known as Museo Rufino Tamayo, opened its doors in 1979. It all started with Rufino Tamayo and his wife Olga, who began collecting pre-Hispanic artifacts in 1951 to safeguard Mexico’s cultural legacy. They generously donated over 1,000 pieces to Oaxaca to keep them out of illegal markets and to honor indigenous art.
You’ll find the museum on Avenida José María Morelos in the heart of Oaxaca. It’s easy to reach by walking, taking a taxi, or using public transport from the city’s main spots. The closest airport is Oaxaca International Airport (XOX), located about 15 km to the south.
For the latest ticket prices, it’s best to check official sources, as recent reviews don’t list them. The museum is open from Tuesday to Saturday (10 AM–5 PM) and on Sunday (10 AM–3 PM), but it’s closed on Mondays.
