Velká Amerika Quarry, often dubbed the “”Czech Grand Canyon,”” is a remarkable abandoned limestone quarry located in the Mořina municipality, approximately 15 km southwest of Prague in the Central Bohemian Region. This impressive site stretches 800 meters in length, 200 meters in width, and reaches depths of up to 100 meters, featuring a pair of lakes that are 18 meters deep at its base. It has become a popular destination for tourists drawn to its breathtaking views and the interconnected smaller quarries like Malá Amerika, Mexiko, and Kanada, which can be accessed through tunnels.
The quarry’s history dates back to the early 20th century when limestone extraction commenced. During the late 1940s and early 1950s, it served as a work camp for political prisoners. Mining activities ceased in 1963, allowing the quarry to evolve into a natural attraction.
To reach Velká Amerika Quarry, visitors can travel to Mořina, which is conveniently accessible by car or taxi from Prague. Public transportation options are limited, as there are no direct bus routes to the site.
There is no admission fee to visit Velká Amerika Quarry, as it is open to the public. However, visitors should adhere to safety guidelines and restrictions to ensure a safe experience.
