Glistening in its baroque beauty, Saint Nicholas’s Cathedral, also known as Ljubljana Cathedral, is a major landmark and the mother church of the Archdiocese of Ljubljana. Nestled in Ljubljana’s enchanting Old Town, the cathedral holds immense historical and cultural significance with its original attraction dating back over 800 years.
History: The current building was built in the early 18th century, replacing a Romanesque church that existed since the 13th century. Devoted to Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of fishermen and boatmen, it embodies Ljubljana’s historical connections to the river.
Location: The Cathedral of Saint Nicholas stands proudly in the historic center of Ljubljana, in close vicinity to the Central Market and Town Hall, offering visual and spiritual enrichment in the heart of the Slovenian capital.
Architecture: The architectural prowess of this church is shown in its ornate Baroque style with the stunning frescoes. The main portal, added in 1996, features Carniolan provincial saints while flanking the modern bronze relief door are angelic statues added in the twentieth century. Inside the church, one can admire artist Giulio Quaglio’s awe-inspiring frescoes that date back to the early 1700s.
