Overlooking Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Sugarloaf Mountain, or Pão de Açúcar, offers jaw-dropping views of Copacabana beach, the Atlantic Ocean, and the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue. This dramatic peak, paired with its iconic cable car journey, makes it one of the city’s must-see attractions.
Sugarloaf Mountain gets its name from its resemblance to a traditional shape of concentrated refined sugar loaf. One of the city’s oldest tourist attractions, its esteemed cable car system was inaugurated in 1912 and has since been upgraded to glass-walled cabins offering spectacular 360-degree views of Rio.
Located in the Urca neighborhood, Sugarloaf Mountain is accessible via taxi, public transportation, or on foot for those located nearby. From Rio’s city center, take bus number 511 or 512.
A round-trip ticket for the Sugarloaf Cable Car costs approximately 120 BRL ($20 USD) for adults and 60 BRL ($10 USD) for children. Tickets can be purchased online or at the ticket counter.
