History

Morro da Urca is part of the famous Sugarloaf Mountain complex and has a long history dating back many hundreds of years. In the 16th century, the area was known for sugarcane plantations, which inspired the name it carries today. How to Get There

You can reach Morro da Urca either by hiking up the well-marked trail from the base of the mountain, or by taking a cable car from the Praia Vermelha station. The hike takes about 40 minutes and the cable car operates every 20 minutes from 8 am to 9 pm daily.

The panoramic views from the top of Morro da Urca are the star attraction, but there’s much more to see. There’s a food court and several shops at the top where you can enjoy a meal or drinks while enjoying the spectacular view. The able car ride itself is also a treat, especially at sunset.

Cable car tickets to Morro da Urca and Sugarloaf Mountain can be purchased at the Praia Vermelha station or online. Prices are about R$110 for adults and R$55 for children. The hiking trail is free, but it’s recommended to go in groups during daylight hours for safety.
