The Oscar Wilde Monument is more than just a tribute to a literary genius; it’s an emblem of courage and non-conformity, staying true to oneself. The flamboyancy of the monument much embodies Wilde’s spirit, making it an unmissable landmark in your Dublin exploration.
Location
Situated in Merrion Square Park, one of Dublin’s Georgian squares, the monument is on the North West corner. It’s within walking distance from the city center, making it easily accessible for visitors.
The Monument
Unveiled in 1997, the Oscar Wilde Monument consists of two parts. First, there is a brightly coloured stone statue of Wilde lounging on a rock, created by Danny Osborne. The second part is a semi-circle of stone pillars featuring Wilde’s quotes, each column varying in height and designed by artist Micheál Mac Liammóir.
What to See
Made from different stones worldwide, including jade, thulite, and granite, the statue of Wilde is a flamboyant spectacle that reflects his larger-than-life personality. The statue of Wilde lounging, with a devil-may-care attitude and exuding self-confidence, captures his wit and charm.
Facing his childhood home across the road, the stone pillars are accompanied by two bronze statues. One depicting Wilde’s pregnant wife, Constance Lloyd, and the second, a male torso, is said to represent the love of his life, Lord Alfred “Bosie” Douglas.
Nearby Attractions
After appreciating the Oscar Wilde Memorial, visitors can explore other points of interest in Merrion Square. Highlights include the Georgian houses with colourful doors, the National Gallery of Ireland nearby, and the Merrion Square Art Exhibition held every Sunday.
Tips
Visit the monument in daylight to appreciate its bold colors. Also, take time to read the inscriptions of Wilde’s wittiest quotes engraved on the pillars. It’s a perfect photographic spot, and sitting next to Wilde’s statue for a picture is almost a rite of passage.
