Victory Gate (Angkor Thom) Travel Guide

Victory Gate is a key entrance to Angkor Thom, the last capital of the Khmer Empire, situated on the eastern wall. Known for its historical and architectural significance, it’s the path through which the king and his triumphant armies would return. This gate leads directly to the Royal Palace area and the Terrace of the Elephants, making it an essential stop when visiting Angkor Thom.

History

Constructed in the late 12th century by King Jayavarman VII, Victory Gate was used by the king to dispatch his army against Champa and to welcome back victorious soldiers. It resembles other gates of Angkor Thom, featuring face towers with calm faces of Avalokiteshvara, representing the king’s omnipresence. The gate is adorned with detailed carvings and statues illustrating mythological themes.

How to Get There

To reach Victory Gate, you can enter Angkor Thom through the South Gate and exit via Victory Gate by following the Small Circuit route, or approach directly from the east. The site is best explored by tuk-tuk or as part of a guided tour. Angkor Thom is about 15 minutes from Siem Reap.
