Known for its scenic beauty and geological marvels, the Yellowstone Caldera has been a coveted destination for nature and adventure enthusiasts. This geologic wonderland is situated in Yellowstone National Park in the western United States, primarily in the state of Wyoming, at the heart of one of the planet’s most active volcanic systems.
The Yellowstone Caldera is around 640,000 years old and is the product of a massive volcanic eruption. The Caldera, also known as the Yellowstone supervolcano, is a significant component of the larger Yellowstone Plateau volcanic field, an area that has been volcanically active for millions of years. The area has been a national park since March 1, 1872, making it the country’s first national park.
Yellowstone National Park can be accessed through five entrances. The most popular way to reach the Caldera is by car or tour bus via the West Entrance, North Entrance, or South Entrance. Direct flights are available to Yellowstone Airport, located just a few miles from the West Entrance.
Entrance fees to Yellowstone National Park vary depending on the mode of transportation. As of 2022, the fees are as follows: $35 per vehicle, $30 per motorcycle or snowmobile, or $20 per visitor arriving by foot or bicycle. An annual pass is available at $70. All entrance fees provide the visitor with a 7-day entrance permit for both Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks.
