Travel Steamer Review: NESUGAR G5 Pro for Carry-On

As someone who travels frequently, I have come to realize that there is nothing worse than arriving at a destination with wrinkled clothing. Whether I am going to a business meeting, dining out, or simply trying to look presentable after a long flight, the appearance of my clothing is far more important to me than I would like to admit. For many years, my approach to removing wrinkles was the same as everyone else's: hang my clothing in the bathroom, turn on the hot water, and hope for the best. Unfortunately, this rarely worked.

However, on my most recent trip, I brought along the NESUGAR G5 Pro, a compact hand-held steamer, and tested it in the same manner as I would any other product while on the road. Here is how it performed.

Its small size allows it to be placed in a corner of the bag or along the side, and it does not add significant weight to the bag.

Additionally, it passed through airport security without any issues. There was no additional screening required, no questions asked, and no need to remove items from my bag at the checkpoint. Anyone who has had a travel accessory flagged and/or removed from their bag knows how valuable peace of mind can be. Since this device must remain in your carry-on bag in order to be useful, this is a major benefit.

Heat-Up Speed

Speed of Heating Up A travel steamer that takes too long to heat up is a travel steamer that you will eventually stop using. The G5 Pro heats up very quickly, so quickly that I was able to fill it, plug it in, and have it ready by the time I took my clothing out of my suitcase and placed them on hangers. I did not have to wait around for it to heat up while I was already running late for something. The speed at which it heats up is what makes the difference between a tool you use every morning and one that remains in the bag.

Steam Performance in the Real World

While specifications are one thing, a small hotel room at 7:00 a.m. is another. When used in a real-world setting, the G5 Pro provided a continuous stream of steam that I could depend on from the first pass to the last. Unlike many lower-priced hand-held steamers, it did not sputter, spray hot water onto my clothing, or lose steam pressure halfway through steaming a garment. The steam provided by the G5 Pro is powerful enough to loosen fibers quickly, but controlled enough so that you do not over-soak the fabric. After steaming, my clothing appeared fresh and was ready to wear almost immediately rather than requiring a lengthy drying process.

Wrinkle Removal: Shirts, Pants, Jackets, and More

This is where a travel steamer either succeeds or fails, and the G5 Pro succeeded.

Shirts: Dress shirts and casual button-downs are the most common types of clothing found on a traveler's packing list, and they are also the most likely to develop wrinkles during transit. With only a few passes, the G5 Pro removed wrinkles from the collar, cuffs, and body of each shirt. An ironing board was not necessary.

Pants: Lightweight or jean/denim material respond well to steam, and the G5 Pro processed them with ease. Since it is a hand-held device, you can steam from top to bottom and allow gravity to assist in removing wrinkles.

Jackets and Blazers: Structured garments such as blazers are often difficult for small steamers to handle; however, steam is much gentler on a blazer than a hot iron. The G5 Pro removed wrinkles caused by packing from the lapels and sleeves of each blazer while maintaining the shape of the jacket.

Merino Sweater Test: The biggest surprise was my merino wool sweater. Merino wool is an excellent choice for traveling; however, once it has been compressed in a suitcase, it can develop deep wrinkles that cannot be removed by simply hanging it up. I anticipated that the G5 Pro would struggle with these wrinkles. To my surprise, it removed them without any difficulty, allowing the fibers to relax and returning the sweater to a clean, wearable condition. For a fabric that you definitely do not want to use an iron on, this was a major accomplishment. No Ironing Board? No Problem What I enjoy most about traveling with a steamer is that I do not have to rely on the hotel's iron and ironing board, which are frequently unavailable, broken, or stored in a closet in questionable condition. Instead, I simply used my bed. By placing a garment flat on my bed and steaming it, I had a stable surface to work against, and it worked perfectly. For garments that I preferred to steam vertically, I hung them from the closet rod or the back of a door. Using these two methods, I never felt the need for an ironing board.

Water Capacity and Usable Steaming Time

Although the water tank is designed for travel and therefore is not large, it is appropriately sized for how you will typically use it. A single fill provided me with sufficient steaming time to complete one or two outfits before needing to refill. For a typical hotel-room routine (i.e., steaming a shirt, pants, and jacket prior to attending a meeting), I rarely needed to refill the tank more than once. This is the compromise you make with any compact steamer: a smaller tank means you may need to refill it if you plan on steaming multiple garments at once.

For quick touch-ups on-the-go, the capacity was adequate, and a smaller tank contributes to keeping the entire unit lighter and easier to pack.

Hotel-Room Usability for Business and International Travel

For me, this is where the G5 Pro makes the most sense. Hotel rooms are generally small, outlets are often located in inconvenient locations, and you typically do not have much time. The G5 Pro can be easily filled from the bathroom sink, is easy to hold, and is easy to store once you are finished. Both setup and cleanup require very little time, which is crucial when preparing for a 9:00 a.m. meeting in a city you are still unfamiliar with. Business travelers especially will find that using the G5 Pro increases their confidence. Upon arrival, you can unpack your clothing and have them looking sharp within minutes without having to call down to the front desk to request an iron.

Global Voltage: 100-240V and Adapter Situation

One of the primary advantages for frequent travelers is that the G5 Pro has a voltage range of 100-240V. This means that the steamer can safely operate on the electrical systems in the United States, Europe, the United Kingdom, and many other parts of the world. You do not have to worry about damaging a device or purchasing a large voltage converter.

However, there is one practical point worth mentioning. The G5 Pro comes standard with a USA plug, and the only adapter included in the box was an EU adapter. During my trip, I had to use my own UK adapter, which functioned perfectly. The universal voltage did its job; I simply had to provide the correct plug. My recommendation: if you plan on traveling to the United Kingdom or any other location where the included EU adapter will not work, bring your own adapter. It is a minor detail, and it is wise to check your destinations prior to departure so you do not have to search for one at the airport. If you already travel with a universal adapter, then you are covered.

Compact Travel Steamers vs. Home Models

It is important to be realistic about what a compact steamer can and cannot do. Home-use steamers generally have larger water tanks, greater power, and longer continuous operating times. If you plan on steaming an entire wardrobe, curtains, or a large amount of laundry, then a full-sized unit will complete the task faster and you will not have to refill as frequently.

However, these units are bulky, heavy, and completely unsuitable for inclusion in a carry-on bag. They are intended to be stored in a closet rather than packed into a suitcase.

On the other hand, the smallest travel steamers are small and light; however, they may lack sufficient power to produce adequate steam output, have a small tank that empties quickly, and produce results that make you wish you had brought an iron instead. The G5 Pro falls somewhere in between these two extremes. It is small enough to be easily transported while traveling; however, it possesses sufficient capability to remove real wrinkles from real garments (including difficult ones like merino). For traveling purposes, this balance is exactly what I desire.

• Only an EU adapter is included; therefore you will need your own adapter for use in the United Kingdom and other regions

• The small tank requires refilling if you plan on steaming numerous garments at once

Final Verdict

The NESUGAR G5 Pro has earned its place in my carry-on bag. It resolved the exact issue I purchased it for: removing travel wrinkles quickly without having to rely on an iron, an ironing board, or taking a chance on the hotel's amenities. It fit into my bag, passed through security without issue, heated up quickly, and successfully removed wrinkles from everything I put it through (including a difficult-to-remove wrinkle merino sweater). Is it a replacement for a home-use steamer? No; nor does it attempt to be.

However, as a travel companion for business trips, vacations, and everything in between; it provides an ideal combination of power and portability. Just remember to bring the correct plug for your destination. If you travel frequently and wish to look put together upon arrival; then the G5 Pro is an easy recommendation.
