Visiting ARTIS in Amsterdam is a great adventure for those who love nature and history. Nestled in the city’s center, ARTIS holds the title of the oldest zoo in the Netherlands and ranks among the top five oldest worldwide.
ARTIS was established in 1838 by G.F. Westerman, J.W.H. Werlemann, and J.J. Wijsmuller to enhance the understanding of natural history. Originally called Natura Artis Magistra, meaning “Nature is the teacher of art and science,” it quickly became known simply as ‘Artis.’ It started with a small animal collection and grew by acquiring a traveling animal collection, becoming a must-see spot. Getting to ARTIS is easy with Amsterdam’s public transport.
You can hop on tram number 14 and get off at the Artis stop. Buses 22 and 48 are also options. If you enjoy walking or biking, ARTIS is conveniently located near the lovely Plantage neighborhood. ARTIS offers several attractions, including the Zoo with diverse animals, the Planetarium, the Butterfly Garden, and the Hortus Botanicus, one of Europe’s oldest botanical gardens. There are also historical buildings and educational programs for all ages. Ticket prices fluctuate based on the season and age. Typically, adult tickets range from €30 to €40. Kids under three get in free, and there are discounts for children, students, and seniors. September is a great time to visit due to discounts.
