Bran Castle is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Romania. The castle is located in the town of Bran, in the Transylvania region of the country. The castle is most famously known for being the home of Vlad the Impaler, the 15th-century ruler of Wallachia who was immortalized in the Bram Stoker novel, Dracula.
Bran Castle, dramatically located on a hill in Bran village in Romania, was initially built by the Teutonic Knights in 1212. Over the years, it has been used for many purposes, from a customs post to a royal residence. It’s famously associated with the Dracula legend, although it’s debatable whether Vlad Tepes, the historical figure who inspired the character, ever stayed there.
The castle is approximately 30 kilometers south of Brasov. If travelling by car, Bran Castle is reachable via National Road 73. There are also daily buses operating from Brasov to Bran. The nearest airport is in Bucharest, the country’s capital, from where it’s possible to either take a bus or train to Brasov and finally a bus to Bran.
Entry tickets can be purchased on-site or online. Tickets cost 45 Lei (about $11) for adults, 35 Lei for students and seniors, and 10 Lei for children. Discounts on group tickets are also available. The ticket includes access to the castle and its grounds.
