The Franciscan Church of the Annunciation stands iconically in Ljubljana’s central square, Preseren Square, captivating visitors with its striking pink facade. This Baroque church, belonging to the Franciscan Monastery, is not only a heartwarming symbol of the city but also a beacon of tranquility in the bustling city center.
History
Built between 1646 and 1660, the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation replaced an older Gothic church that had been on the same site since the 13th century. The current structure, much affected by earthquakes, underwent renovation in the 18th century when the beautiful pink color was added to its facade. The church is dedicated to the Annunciation of Mary, featured in a magnificent altar painting by Italian artist Matevž Langus.
How to Get There
With the church’s prime location in the heart of Ljubljana’s pedestrian zone, the easiest way to get there is on foot or by bicycle. Should you come from outside the city, Ljubljana is well connected by train and bus networks, and the city’s main bus and train station is just a short 15-minute walk from Preseren Square.
