History
Lancetilla Botanical Garden has an intriguing past. It started as an experimental planting station by the Tela Railroad Company. Under Dr. Wilson Popenoe’s guidance, it became a hub for botanical research. The garden played a crucial role in transforming Honduras into a major banana producer. It was here that the first African Palm, Rambutan, and Mangosteen plantations in Central America were established.
How to Get There
Getting to Lancetilla is pretty straightforward. You can take a taxi from Tela, and it’s wise to arrange for the driver to pick you up later. The round trip costs about L230. If you’re feeling adventurous, rent a bicycle from Garifuna Tours near Central Park in Tela. Just be careful on the CA13 stretch between Tela and the gardens.
