The Martha Brae River, located in Jamaica, is one of the top travel destinations in this Caribbean paradise. Famous for its tranquil beauty, the 20-mile river allows visitors to indulge in a calming and charming rafting experience.

Location:

The river lies in the northern region of the island near Falmouth, about a 40-minute drive from Montego Bay. It flows from the mountains of Trelawny in Cockpit Country, eventually reaching the gorgeously turquoise Caribbean Sea.

Attractions:

Here’s what you can enjoy at the Martha Brae River:

  1. Bamboo Rafting: Take a leisurely trip down the river on a 30-foot bamboo raft, which offers a unique and serene way to experience the surroundings. A knowledgeable local guide rows the raft and will regale you with folk stories and legends tied to the river.
  2. Rafter’s Village: Before starting your rafting excursion, you can explore the 6-acre ‘Rafter’s Village’, which includes a souvenir shop, a herb garden, picnic grounds, a swimming pool, and modern restrooms.

Hours:

Rafting tours are available daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Tips:

  • Being a popular attraction, it’s advisable to book in advance to secure a spot, especially during peak season.
  • The raft ride takes approximately 1-1.5 hours, so don’t forget your sunscreen and hat.
  • Do bring a swimsuit if you plan on taking a dip in the river.
  • There aren’t many food vendors along the river, so prepare by bringing snacks and drinks with you.

Food & Shopping:

There’s a bar and lounge at Rafter’s Village for refreshments. The Village also houses a souvenir shop where you can shop for local arts and crafts.
