Located in Jordan’s Eastern Desert, it was established as a breeding center for endangered or locally extinct wildlife, providing an exemplary model of wildlife preservation.

History of Shaumari Wildlife Reserve

Created in 1975 by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature, Shaumari Wildlife Reserve was Jordan’s first-ever nature reserve. Over the years, it has successfully established herds of some of the most endangered species of the region like Arabian Oryx, Somali ostriches, Persian Onager, and Gazelle.

How to Get There

Shaumari Wildlife Reserve is around 120 kilometers east of Amman, near the town of Azraq. The most convenient way to get there is by private or rental vehicle since there’s no public transportation available to the reserve.
