For explorers seeking peace, tranquility, and a spiritual journey, Touchstone Maze nestled in Scotland’s moorlands offers an enriching experience. Designed as a pilgrimage, it guides walkers through the story of the universe, calling to both the adventurous and the contemplative alike.

History

The Touchstone Maze was designed and constructed at Covenanters’ Dike on Lundin Farm in 1997 by author Alastair McIntosh, artist Jill Purce and landscape artist Mark Goldsworthy. The Maze represents a pilgrimage through all Earthly life, built around Celtic festivals and a deep respect for the natural world.

How to Get There

Touchstone Maze is situated to the northeast of Biggar, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. The simplest way to get there is by car, generally an hour’s drive from Edinburgh. It’s located on Crown Road and then onto a farm track that leads directly to the Maze site.

List of Attractions

At Touchstone Maze, the true attraction is the park itself. Some highlights include:

  • The Wandering in Time circular maze walk, guiding visitors through 18 stones and a spiritual journey.
  • The stunning, tranquil natural setting and views of the surrounding hills.
  • A nearby sacred well, inviting contemplation and offering healing lore.

Ticket Information

The Touchstone Maze is an open public site and free to visit, there are no tickets required. Voluntary donations can be made to support the site.

Tips for Visiting

  1. Given the spiritual nature of the Maze, it’s important to approach the visit respectfully and mindfully.
  2. The site is entirely outdoors and can be muddy in poor weather, so robust footwear and appropriate clothing are recommended.
  3. Remember to bring your own food and water, as there are no nearby facilities.
  4. Remember to follow the ethos of leaving no trace to keep the site clean for other visitors.
  5. The journey through the maze is ideally made in solitude or in quiet companionship, to fully engage in the spiritual reflection it’s designed to inspire.
