Located in southwestern Turkey, Pamukkale is famous for its striking white travertine terraces and mineral-rich hot springs. The name “Pamukkale” translates to “cotton castle,” which perfectly captures the scenic beauty of this landscape. Together with the ancient city of Hierapolis, Pamukkale was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.
Historical Significance
Since ancient times, Pamukkale has been known as a center for healing, with its thermal waters believed to have therapeutic benefits. The city of Hierapolis was established atop these hot springs in the 2nd century BC, evolving into a prominent spa destination. After a significant earthquake in 17 AD, the Romans reconstructed the city, adding notable structures such as a large amphitheater.
