Bunratty Castle has a rich and varied history spanning over 1,000 years. The site began as a Viking trading camp in the 10th century. Over the centuries, it was occupied by Normans, who built the first defensive fortress, and later by the MacNamara family, who constructed the current structure in the 15th century. The castle has changed hands numerous times, including periods of occupation by the English Long Parliament during the Confederate Wars. In the mid-20th century, it was saved from demolition by Viscount Gort, who restored it to its former glory in the 1960s. Today, it stands as one of the most complete and authentic castles in Ireland.
