Discovered in 1861 by a Chinese laborer named Don Manuel Santos Parga, the Cuevas de Bellamar are estimated to be around 300,000 years old. The caves have been the focus of numerous scientific studies, including those by Cuban speleologist Antonio Núñez Jiménez.
Situated approximately 5 kilometers southeast of Matanzas, the caves can be accessed by taxi, bus number 12 from Plaza Libertad, or by walking from central Matanzas. Tours are also available from Varadero, a nearby resort town.
