The Mahasthan Archaeological Museum is situated in the Bogra district of Bangladesh. Serving as a historical treasure trove, it showcases excavated artifacts from Mahasthan Garh, one of the earliest urban archaeological sites in the country. In this excellent repository, visitors can explore the intricate tapestry of Bangladesh’s ancient civilizations.
The Museum was established in 1967 near the archaeological site of Mahasthan Garh. Initially, it had limited collections, but the steady influx of discovered artifacts helped it grow its repository. The area surrounding the museum itself is believed to be the ancient city of Pundranagara, dating back to the 3rd century BC.
The Mahasthan Archaeological Museum can be accessed from Bogra by local transportation like auto-rickshaws or taxis. If you’re coming from Dhaka, choosing a long-distance bus or renting a car to reach Bogra, followed by a local taxi to Mahasthan Garh, is a good option. The nearest railway station is at Santahar, about 18 km from the site.
The museum houses four galleries. The major attractions include:
Tickets for the museum can be purchased at the entrance. Entry fees are 20 BDT for local visitors and 100 BDT for foreign visitors. The museum is open every day except for Thursday, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
