Visiting the various galleries and corridors of the National Museum of Art of Guatemala (MUNAG) prompts contemplation on the millennia-old heritage possessed by Guatemalans, vividly captured in unparalleled works of art.
The MUNAG was fully designed and implemented by the government under President Dr. Alejandro Giammattei, with significant contributions from the Ministry of Culture and Sports. The museum is a benchmark in the modernization of state-run museums and cultural centers that preserve the country’s cultural assets dating back over three thousand years.
Located in the former Royal Palace of the Captain Generals, the building has undergone several modifications and renovations since the 16th century for various uses. It was not until 1776 that it became the center of administrative and political power of the Kingdom of Guatemala.
The museum sits opposite the central park of La Antigua Guatemala, a city granted the title “The Very Noble and Very Loyal City of Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala” by King Philip II in 1566. This colonial city was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1979, alongside Tikal National Park.
