Prepare for a surreal foray into the mysteries of the industrial age at Steampunk HQ, an interactive museum and gallery in Oamaru, New Zealand. This unique attraction welcomes anyone with a passion for retro-futurism, creating an intriguing blend of steampunk culture, art, and history.

History

Steampunk HQ was established in 2011 by a group of passionate enthusiasts. Set in a stunning 19th century Victorian building, the headquarters has become an iconic feature of Oamaru’s historic precinct, showcasing local and international steampunk art and contraptions.

How to Get There

Oamaru can be accessed by State Highway 1, with the Steampunk HQ located on the corner of Itchen & Harbour Street. If you are coming from Christchurch, the drive is approximately 3 hours, from Dunedin it’s approximately 1.5 hours. Oamaru also has its own small airport with daily flights to/from Christchurch.

Ticket Information

Entry to Steampunk HQ is ticketed. Adult tickets are NZD 15, seniors and students NZD 10, children NZD 5, and a family pass (2 adults, 2 children) is NZD 35. Tickets are available for purchase on-site.

Tips for Visiting

  • Allow at least an hour to explore the exhibits across multiple rooms and outdoors.
  • Don’t miss the Infernal Combustion Chamber or The Portal experiences, each costing an additional NZD 2.
  • If possible, coincide your visit with the Oamaru Steampunk Festival, which occurs annually in June.
  • Photography is allowed in all areas, so bring your camera to capture the unique exhibits.
  • Consider visiting during the evening, when the venue is illuminated with atmospheric light.
