Supertree Grove Singapore
18 Marina Gardens Drive Gardens By the Bay Gardens by the Bay, Singapore 018953 SingaporeSupertree Grove: Singapore's Most Iconic After-Dark Spectacle
Supertree Grove is the image most people picture when they think of modern Singapore. Those towering vertical gardens, rising up to 50 metres above the ground along Marina Gardens Drive, have become the city-state's most photographed landmark since Gardens by the Bay opened in 2012. Whether you arrive in the late afternoon heat or after dark when the lights take over, the grove delivers something genuinely different from anything else in Southeast Asia.
There are 18 Supertrees in total, though the grove itself clusters the largest and most dramatic ones together. They are not just decorative. Most of them perform real ecological functions, collecting rainwater, providing ventilation for the nearby conservatories, and generating solar energy through photovoltaic cells embedded in their canopies. The engineering is quietly impressive even if the spectacle tends to get all the attention.
Why Supertree Grove Matters
Singapore has spent decades building a global reputation as a city where ambition meets greenery, and Supertree Grove is the clearest physical expression of that. The structures range from 25 to 50 metres tall and are covered in over 200 species of bromeliads, ferns, orchids, and tropical climbing plants. That planting is maintained constantly, and depending on the season you will notice different species in bloom at different heights.
For travellers, the grove also works as a social hub. Families picnic on the lawn between the trees on most evenings. Couples queue for the OCBC Skyway, the aerial walkway that connects two of the tallest Supertrees at 22 metres above the ground. And at two fixed times each night, the entire grove transforms into a light and music show called Garden Rhapsody that is free to watch from the ground.

Getting There
The easiest approach is via Bayfront MRT station on the Circle and Downtown Lines. From Exit B, the walk to the Supertree Grove takes roughly 10 minutes along a covered pedestrian path. You will pass the ArtScience Museum and the base of Marina Bay Sands along the way, so the approach itself is worth paying attention to.
If you are coming from the Esplanade or the Marina Bay waterfront promenade, you can walk the full length of the bay in about 20 minutes and arrive at the grove from the north. Taxis and ride-hailing services can drop you directly at the Gardens by the Bay entrance on Marina Gardens Drive. Parking is available on site if you are driving.
The Layout and Experience
The grove sits in the outdoor section of Gardens by the Bay, which means it is open to the elements and free to wander through at any hour. The main cluster of large Supertrees forms a rough horseshoe shape around a central lawn, and the base of each tree is planted with dense tropical ground cover. Benches and open grass areas make it easy to find a spot to sit and look up.
The OCBC Skyway connects two of the Supertrees at the northern end of the grove and gives you a perspective that the ground simply cannot offer. From up there, you get a clear sightline across the Marina Bay waterfront, over the rooftop infinity pool of Marina Bay Sands, and back down into the canopy of the grove itself. The walkway is fairly narrow, so it can feel crowded during peak weekend evenings, but the experience is worth it.
The ground-level Supertree Bar operates near the base of the grove and offers drinks with a direct upward view of the trees. It is a reasonable place to wait for the Garden Rhapsody show without standing on the lawn the whole time.
Garden Rhapsody: The Light Show
Garden Rhapsody is the main event for most evening visitors. The Supertrees are fitted with LED lighting systems across their canopies, and the show synchronizes light patterns and colour changes to a curated music programme. It runs twice nightly, and the timing is posted on the Gardens by the Bay website. The show lasts around 15 minutes.
The best viewing spot is the central lawn directly below the trees, lying on your back if you can manage it. The crowd builds quickly in the 10 minutes before the show starts, particularly on weekends, so arriving 20 to 30 minutes early tends to pay off. You do not need a ticket. Just show up.
Best Time to Visit
Late afternoon into evening is the window most visitors aim for. Arriving around 5pm lets you explore the grove in the softer pre-sunset light, which is better for photography and more comfortable in terms of heat. By 7pm the temperature drops noticeably and the lighting on the trees begins to shift. The Garden Rhapsody show typically runs at 7:45pm and again around 8:45pm, though you should confirm current times before visiting as these change periodically.
Weekday evenings are noticeably quieter than weekends. If you want the grove mostly to yourself for photos, a Tuesday or Wednesday evening is your best option. School holidays and public holidays in Singapore bring significantly larger crowds.
The grove is worth visiting in the rain too. The Supertrees look genuinely dramatic against a stormy sky, and the covered paths around Gardens by the Bay offer some shelter without forcing you inside.
Photography Tips
Wide angle is your friend here. The trees are tall and the spacing between them is generous, so a wide lens lets you capture multiple trees with the sky or the Marina Bay skyline behind them. The reflection pool near the conservatories occasionally gives you a mirror image of the trees at night, which is a popular shot.
For the Garden Rhapsody show, a tripod is useful if you want to capture the light trails and colour changes clearly. Handheld shots in low light tend to come out blurry. The show changes colour fast, so burst mode on your phone camera helps.
During daylight, the best angle for showing the full scale of the trees is from the far southern end of the lawn, looking north toward the waterfront. From there you get the height of the tallest Supertrees with the Marina Bay Sands towers visible behind them.
Combining With Nearby Attractions
Supertree Grove sits inside Gardens by the Bay, so you will naturally be close to the Flower Dome and Cloud Forest conservatories. Both require separate paid tickets and are worth several hours on their own. The Cloud Forest in particular, with its indoor waterfall and misty mountain structure, is one of the more surprising indoor experiences in Singapore.
Marina Bay Sands is a 10-minute walk away and the SkyPark Observation Deck there offers a completely different perspective on the Supertrees from above. The ArtScience Museum on the same waterfront runs changing exhibitions throughout the year. If you want to eat nearby, the hawker options at Satay by the Bay inside Gardens by the Bay are good value and popular with locals in the evenings.
Practical Tips
Ground-level access to the grove is free, but the OCBC Skyway and the two conservatories require tickets purchased separately
Buy OCBC Skyway tickets online in advance if you are visiting on a weekend evening to avoid long queues at the counter
Wear comfortable shoes. The pathways are paved and even, but you will cover a lot of ground if you combine the grove with the rest of Gardens by the Bay
Bring water. The outdoor areas can be very warm during the day even with some shade
The grove is fully accessible with paved, flat paths throughout the main areas
Photography drones are not permitted within Gardens by the Bay
The nearest public toilets are located near the conservatory entrance and at the Supertree Observatory area
FAQ
Is Supertree Grove free to visit?
Walking through the grove at ground level costs nothing. The OCBC Skyway aerial walkway has a separate admission fee. The Garden Rhapsody light show is also free to watch from the lawn.
How long should I plan to spend at the grove?
An hour to 90 minutes is enough to explore the grove, walk the Skyway, and catch one Garden Rhapsody show. If you are combining it with the conservatories, allow at least half a day.
Is the Supertree Grove suitable for children?
Very much so. The open lawn areas are popular with families, and the light show tends to go down well with younger visitors. The Skyway has a minimum height requirement, so check that in advance if you are bringing small children who want to go up.
Can I visit during the day, or is it only worth seeing at night?
Both visits have merit. Daytime shows off the plant life on the trees more clearly, and the contrast of green against a blue sky is striking. Night visits offer the light show and the full LED display. If you can only go once, evening is the stronger choice for most people.
Are there food and drink options at the grove?
The Supertree Bar operates at ground level within the grove. Satay by the Bay, a popular hawker centre, is a short walk away inside Gardens by the Bay and is a good option for a proper meal before or after the light show.
