Thor’s Well, known as the drainpipe of the Pacific, is a naturally occurring saltwater fountain located in Oregon’s Cape Perpetua Scenic Area. An awe-inspiring and mesmerizing marvel, this feature provides photographers and nature lovers alike with unparalleled views during high tide and storms.

Location:

Thor’s Well is situated along the Oregon Coast in the Siuslaw National Forest. Approximately three miles south of Yachats, you can find it just off Highway 101.

Attractions:

Here’s what you can experience at Thor’s Well:

  1. The Wonder of the Sea: Watch seawater fill and drain from the well continuously, creating a captivating spectacle. High tide and storms make the well especially breathtaking.
  2. Coastal Trails: Explore nature along the Captain Cook Trail, where you will find spruce forests, volcanic basalt cliffs, and tidal pools.
  3. Nearby Attractions: Visit the Cook’s Chasm and Spouting Horn, two nearby attractions that also exhibit the power and beauty of the Pacific Ocean.

Hours:

The area is open for visitation all day, but to witness the phenomena at its peak, time your visit for an hour before to an hour after high tide.

Tips:

  • Be cautionary around the Well and the waves given the potential danger due to powerful currents and slippery rocks.
  • Bring a high-resolution camera or binoculars for capturing stunning shots and an unforgettable view.
  • Keep a proper distance during stormy weather or high tide for safety.
