Velika Planina is an absolutely stunning Alpine pasture nestled in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps of Slovenia. This place is a gem, known for its breathtaking scenery, traditional herdsmen’s culture, and those charming wooden cottages that look like something out of a fairy tale. Visitors can dive into the traditional lifestyle of the local herdsmen, savor delicious local dishes, and soak in the rich history of the area.
Velika Planina has been a pasture since the early 16th century. It’s one of the few places in Europe where you can still find a high mountain herdsmen’s village. Every summer, herdsmen bring their cattle to graze on the plateau and live in these unique single-room dwellings with conical roofs. The area is also famous for its karst landscape, which includes caves and unique geological formations.
To get to Velika Planina, you can take a cable car from Kamniška Bistrica. The bottom station is about a 50-minute drive from Ljubljana. There are also buses from Ljubljana to Stahovica, where you can hop on the cable car. If you’re up for a hike, there are several well-marked trails like Stahovica-Pasje, Krivčevo-Podkrajnik, and Kamniška Bistrica-Kraljev Hrib.
The cable car runs on a set schedule, and you can buy tickets online or at the ticket office. Prices vary depending on the season, with options for return and one-way tickets. The cable car ride takes about 5 minutes, and from the upper station, you can either take a ski lift or walk up to the Gradišce area.
Velika Planina is a unique destination that offers a mix of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and traditional lifestyle. Whether you’re into hiking, exploring historical sites, or tasting local cuisine, Velika Planina is a must-visit spot for any traveler.
