Winding through tranquil forests and verdant landscapes, the Whanganui River is New Zealand’s longest navigable river and promises a memorable journey for adventurous souls. Immerse yourself in its rich Maori heritage, explore the captivating natural settings or take a paddle on its eternal flow.

History

The Whanganui River has been a lifeline for Maori tribes and early European settlers for hundreds of years. In 2017, in a world first, it was granted the same legal rights as a human being, in recognition of the bond between the local Maori tribe, known as the iwi, and the river.

How to Get There

The Whanganui River runs through the Whanganui National Park in the lower North Island. The park is approximately 4 hours drive from either Auckland or Wellington. There are shuttle services providing transport from nearby towns to various points along the river for canoe journeys.

List of Attractions

  • Whanganui National Park: Beautiful wilderness perfect for hiking and wildlife spotting.
  • Bridge to Nowhere: Accessible only by river, this isolated bridge has an intriguing history.
  • Canoeing and Jet Boating: Various operators offer tours and rentals.
  • Unique fauna and flora: The river is a haven for various bird species and surrounded by verdant forest.

Ticket Information

Canoe-journey prices vary by operator and the length of the trip. Guided tours often include transport, equipment and accommodation, and booking in advance is recommended. Exploring the riverbanks and the National park itself is free.

Tips for Visiting

  • Consider a guided tour for multi-day canoe journeys. It will help ensure safety and provide interesting local knowledge.
  • Bring insect repellent. The area can get quite ‘buggy’, especially in the evenings.
  • Take a waterproof bag for your belongings. Even skilled paddlers can occasionally tip their canoes!
  • Please respect the river’s status and the local Maori customs.
