Winding through tranquil forests and verdant landscapes, the Whanganui River is New Zealand’s longest navigable river and promises a memorable journey for adventurous souls. Immerse yourself in its rich Maori heritage, explore the captivating natural settings or take a paddle on its eternal flow.
The Whanganui River has been a lifeline for Maori tribes and early European settlers for hundreds of years. In 2017, in a world first, it was granted the same legal rights as a human being, in recognition of the bond between the local Maori tribe, known as the iwi, and the river.
The Whanganui River runs through the Whanganui National Park in the lower North Island. The park is approximately 4 hours drive from either Auckland or Wellington. There are shuttle services providing transport from nearby towns to various points along the river for canoe journeys.
Canoe-journey prices vary by operator and the length of the trip. Guided tours often include transport, equipment and accommodation, and booking in advance is recommended. Exploring the riverbanks and the National park itself is free.
