The M4 Sherman on Place McAuliffe belonged to the 11th Armored Division and was knocked out near Bastogne in the winter fighting; it has sat on the square since, scarred and unrestored. Most visitors photograph it without registering the holes. It shares the square with a bust of General McAuliffe, whose one-word reply to the German surrender demand — "Nuts!" — the town has never stopped trading on.
