Just under 7,000 German soldiers are buried at Recogne, most of them killed in the Ardennes offensive, under low crosses of dark grey stone set in rough grass. It is a deliberately austere place and a very different experience from the American cemeteries — no flags, no marble, no inscriptions beyond names and dates, many of them reading the same December and January. Visiting both in one day is the thing most people remember about a trip to Bastogne.
