Bunker Assenois
Assenois, 6600 Bastogne, BelgiumB
Posted by Brandon B.AdminOn 26 December 1944 Lieutenant Charles Boggess drove his Sherman through the German line here, opening the corridor that ended the encirclement of Bastogne. Patton's Third Army had been driving north for five days; this unremarkable stretch of road south-west of town is where the siege actually broke. A bunker and a marker stand at the spot. It gets a fraction of the visitors the Mardasson does, and it is arguably the more decisive ground.
