Church of Our Saviour, one of Copenhagen’s most iconic buildings. Renowned for its distinctive spiral spire and expansive city views, this church is a breathtaking amalgamation of architectural merit and historical significance.

The Structure

Constructed in the Baroque style during the 17th century, the Church of Our Saviour is most famous for its 90-meter-high, helix spire adorned with an external winding staircase. This gold-trimmed spire, designed by architect Lauritz de Thurah, offers an exhilarating climb culminating in spectacular views of Copenhagen.

What to See

The church interior exudes sophistication with its Dutch-inspired ornate carved altar, intricately decorated organ facade, and pulpit rich in symbolism. Quadrangular galleries on Corinthian columns, pews, and a fantastic allegorical painting adorning the ceiling pique the interest of art and architecture lovers alike.

The great organ, which is still operational and dating back to 1698, claims a pride of place in the church’s interior.

Climbing the Spire

For the adventurous, a climb up the 400 steps to the top of the spire is a must. The final 150 steps spiral around the outside of the spire, offering panoramic views of Copenhagen’s cityscape, including the nearby canal and famous colourful houses of Nyhavn.

Services & Events

The church conducts regular services and hosts concerts and performances, especially organ recitals, attracting both local worshipers and tourists.

Tips

Weather conditions can dictate whether the tower is open for climbing or not, so it’s always a good idea to check ahead. Be mindful of dress code out of respect for those attending services.

The Church of Our Saviour, with its enchanting spire climb and artistic interior, is a masterpiece attracting tourists seeking a touch of history, architectural brilliance, and unique experience. This attraction will unquestionably heighten your Copenhagen exploration.
