Freetown Christiania is an autonomous, alternative neighborhood in Copenhagen, where creativity, uniqueness, and freedom take center stage in a delightful blend of vibrant art, verdant scenery, and communal spirit.

Located in the borough of Christianshavn, Freetown Christiania is about a 15-minute walk from Christianshavn Metro Station. The area formerly served as a military base.

The Community

Founded in 1971 by squatters and artists, Christiania declared itself a ‘free town’, autonomous from the Danish government. This self-governing community, home to around 900 inhabitants, now thrives on a spirit of togetherness and a collective desire to live outside established societal norms.

What to See

As you explore Christiania, you will encounter colorfully decorated homes in a mix of architectural styles, art galleries showcasing works from local artists, and organic eateries serving an assortment of delicious food.

The car-free, green neighbourhood, crisscrossed with trails perfect for a walk or bike ride, boasts lush vegetation and a tranquil lake. Don’t miss “Nemoland,” a large outdoor stage that hosts free concerts in summers.

A walk down ‘Pusher Street,’ previously known for its open cannabis trade, reveals fascinating wall graffiti and murals. While trading is no longer allowed, the vivid colors and art on display continue to enthrall visitors.

Shopping & Dining

Christiania holds several workshops and small businesses producing everything from recycled clothes to pottery, providing plenty of options for unique souvenirs. For dining, there are rustic, cozy eateries that serve everything from organic delicacies to regular fare.

Rules to Follow

Remember, Christiania has its laws. Respect the rules posted at entrances, including no photos in sensitive areas, no running (it may cause panic), and no hard drugs.

Although generally peaceful, Christiania has a distinct counterculture vibe, and it’s best to take a daytime visit first. Take a guided tour from a local to gain an authentic insight into the history and spirit of this unique place.

Freetown Christiania, with its distinct subculture, offers a fascinating perspective on ‘alternative living.’ Visitors exploring this self-proclaimed anarchy in the heart of Copenhagen will be left with an unforgettable experience and a deeper understanding of communal living.
