Boasting an elevated position over the quaint town of Piran, St. George’s Cathedral, also known as Duomo di San Giorgio, is a stunning architectural masterpiece. This Venetian Renaissance-style church offers both a spiritual retreat and a captivating glimpse into the history of Slovenian coastal culture.

Getting There

Piran is a pedestrian-only town. If driving, park your vehicle at one of the nearby public lots like Fornače parking lot and take a short, scenic stroll through the old town towards the cathedral. From the Tartini Square, it’s an approximately five-minute uphill walk to the Cathedral.

Attractions

The Cathedral: The cathedral’s stunning facade, beautifully decorated interior, and the impressive high altar dedicated to St. George are highlights.

Campanile (bell tower): Modeled after the St. Mark’s Campanile in Venice, this 46.5-meter bell tower next to the Cathedral offers breathtaking panoramic views.

Baptistery: Located next to the Cathedral, this octagon-shaped building is dedicated to St. John the Baptist.

Visiting Hours

The Cathedral is usually open from early morning until early evening. It’s advisable to check the exact timetable beforehand, as services can alter visiting hours.

Tickets & Pricing

Entry to the St. George’s Cathedral is usually free, though a small donation to aid its upkeep is appreciated. There is an admission fee for visiting the bell tower.

Shopping & Dining

Being in the heart of Piran, numerous cafes and restaurants are within walking distance, serving regional seafood specialities and Slovenian wines. For shoppers, local boutiques and artisan shops in the nearby lanes offer unique memorabilia.

Tips

  • Be prepared for the steep but fairly short climb up to the Cathedral.
  • Don’t miss the climb to the Campanile. The panoramic view over Piran and the Adriatic Sea is well worth the effort.
