Höfuðstöðin was created to feature Chromo Sapiens, which first appeared at the Icelandic Pavilion during the Venice Biennale in 2019. This installation, made up of three caves crafted from synthetic hair extensions, immerses visitors in soundscapes from the Icelandic band HAM. It offers a multi-sensory journey that encourages guests to explore their inner world, transforming them into Chromo Sapiens as they leave.
Nestled in the scenic Elliðaárdalur valley, Höfuðstöðin is just a short drive from Reykjavik’s city center. You can find it at Rafstöðvarvegur 1a, 110 Reykjavik, Iceland. The center is easily accessible by car or public transport.
Höfuðstöðin operates from 10 am to 6 pm on weekdays and 11 am to 5 pm on weekends. While tickets are available at the center, it’s wise to book in advance, especially during busy tourist times.
Höfuðstöðin and the Chromo Sapiens exhibit provide a distinctive and enriching experience for anyone visiting Iceland. The blend of historical importance, cutting-edge art, and natural beauty makes it a must-see destination. Whether you’re an art lover or just seeking a memorable cultural outing, a trip to Höfuðstöðin is sure to leave a lasting impression.
