Pico Turquino stands as Cuba’s tallest mountain, nestled within the Sierra Maestra range. It offers a captivating mix of natural splendor and historical depth, making it an essential destination for both adventurers and history buffs.
The mountain’s first recorded ascent was in 1860 by Fred W. Ramsden. During the Cuban Revolution, it served as a pivotal site for Fidel Castro and his forces. In 1953, a bust of José MartÃ, a hero of Cuban independence, was installed at the summit.
Travelers typically begin their journey to Pico Turquino from Santo Domingo. The closest major city is Santiago de Cuba, accessible via international flights. From Santo Domingo, local guides are available to help navigate the trails leading to the peak.
Access to the national park requires a fee, which includes a mandatory Cuban guide. The cost is approximately 20 convertible pesos.
