Introduction

History

Purchased by the Crown in 1854 for £15, it became a public domain in 1890. In the 1920s and 1930s, prisoners constructed roads and trails, now serving as walkways.

How to Get There

Access Rangitoto Island via a 25-minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland or Devonport Ferry Terminal. Ferries dock at Rangitoto Wharf, while private boats can use Islington Bay Wharf. Experienced kayakers can reach the island in about two hours from the mainland.
