Ses Salines Natural Park: Salt Flats, Birds and Beaches

The Ses Salines Natural Park covers the southern tip of Ibiza, the northern part of Formentera and the stretch of sea between them. Created in 2001, it protects one of the most important natural areas in the Balearic Islands: working salt pans, dunes, juniper woodland, sandy beaches and underwater meadows of Posidonia seagrass.

Those seagrass meadows are a major reason Ibiza is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They keep the water exceptionally clear and support a huge variety of marine life.

The Salt Flats

Salt has been harvested here since ancient times, and it was once the island's most important export. The shallow pans still produce salt today, and their colours shift from white to pink depending on the light and the season. They are best seen from the roads and paths around the edges of the park.

Wildlife

The wetlands are an important stopover for migrating birds. Flamingos are often seen feeding in the pans, along with herons, egrets and other waders, especially outside the peak summer months. Bring binoculars if you have them.

What to Do

• Beaches: Ses Salines and Es Cavallet are two of Ibiza's most famous beaches, both inside the park.
• Walking: trails lead along the coast and to old defensive towers, including Torre de ses Portes at the southern tip.
• Birdwatching: the salt pans are the best spot on the island to see flamingos.
• Sunset: the western edge of the park, near Cap des Falcó, has beautiful views at the end of the day.

Visiting Responsibly

Stay on marked paths, keep off the dunes, do not disturb nesting birds and take your rubbish home. Anchoring on the seagrass is restricted to protect it.
