Shiprock, also known as “Tse Bit’a’i” in Navajo, is a striking volcanic rock formation located in the Navajo Nation in northwestern New Mexico. Rising nearly 1,600 feet (488 meters) above the surrounding desert landscape, Shiprock is a prominent landmark with a towering spire and jagged ridges that resemble a ship’s hull, hence its name. This sacred site holds great cultural significance for the Navajo people, who consider it a sacred mountain and an important symbol in their mythology and traditional stories. Visitors can admire Shiprock from a distance as it is not open to climbing due to its cultural and spiritual significance to the Navajo Nation.
