Sun Studio, known as “The Birthplace of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” is a landmark recording studio in Memphis, Tennessee. It’s not only where the blending of blues and country styles sparked a musical revolution, but it’s also where music legends like Elvis Presley, B.B. King, and Johnny Cash began their recording careers.

History

Founded by Sam Phillips in 1950, Sun Studio gave many undiscovered musicians a chance to express their unique style. Perhaps the most famous of these was Elvis Presley, who walked into the studio in 1953 and began the journey of becoming a global icon. The Studio was named a National Historic Landmark in 2003 due to its significant influence on American music.

How to get there

Sun Studio is just under 10 kilometers from Memphis International Airport for those traveling by air. It’s easily accessible by car or taxi from all parts of Memphis. If you’re staying downtown, it’s a quick trip, and there’s also a free shuttle that runs between Graceland, Sun Studio, and the Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum.
